CM announces introduction of local language subjects in state examinations

Speaking at the Babu Hajom Kissor Sing Memorial Lecture in Shillong, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of preserving Khasi and Garo languages and culture.

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on November 4, announced that local languages will be introduced as mandatory subjects in various state examinations, reflecting the commitment to promote these languages through various interventions while awaiting their official inclusion in the Eighth Schedule.

Speaking at the Babu Hajom Kissor Sing Memorial Lecture in Shillong, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of preserving Khasi and Garo languages and culture.

“While recognition for our language by its inclusion in the Eighth Schedule is awaited, we don’t want to leave any stone unturned to promote our own language through different interventions in the State”, the CM stated.

He also stated that the government will support for the research, development, and promotion of local languages by providing financial assistance to scholars, writers, and authors.

‘The government has been actively engaging with the central authorities to include Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would officially recognise the languages. Recognising the significance of documenting culture and language, the State Government is developing a special program to support research and writing focused on promoting local language and culture.

The policy for this initiative is taking shape, and sufficient funds will be allocated to support research and writing that explores various aspects of society, people, and leaders in the local language. The goal is to ensure that the younger generation can learn about their culture and rich traditions in their native language,’ the minister stated.

Additionally, financial support will be provided to filmmakers to create audio-visual content that promotes local culture and language. The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is launching an orientation program on language, where MLAs from Garo Hills will receive basic orientation in Khasi language, and MLAs from Khasi-Jaintia Hills will be introduced to the Garo language.
