CM lays foundation for Rongjeng stadium in EGH, pledges ₹1000cr for statewide sports infrastructure

The stadium is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 9.25 crore, covering the development of the football ground and the construction of the spectators' gallery.

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on October 12 laid foundation for Rongjeng Stadium in East Garo Hills(EGH) in presence of Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri and MLAs Jim Sangma  and Rupert Momin on October 12 and announced an ambitious plan to allocate close to Rs.1000 crore for sports infrastructure development across the state in the next five years.

The stadium is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 9.25 crore, covering the development of the football ground and the construction of the spectators’ gallery.

During the ceremony, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasised the vision of the late PA Sangma, who held a strong connection with Rongjeng and its people. He highlighted the development of Rongjeng Sub Division and other infrastructure in the region, aligning with the late PA Sangma’s vision.

Addressing sports infrastructure development, Sangma noted that the government had significantly increased spending in the last five years, allocating over Rs. 400 crore compared to the previous 45 years.

Sangma outlined the government’s focus on upgrading 25 football playgrounds in the state with artificial turf and emphasised the importance of promoting various sports to harness youth potential. He also shared that Meghalaya Games 2023 will be hosted in Tura this year, bringing together over 3000 athletes from across the state.

The aim is to create robust infrastructure and provide platforms for the youth to showcase their talents, he stressed. Sangma also briefed the attendees about the CM Elevate program, designed to support entrepreneurs in setting up diverse business ventures, urging the public to make the most of this initiative.

Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri affirmed the government’s commitment to promoting sports in Meghalaya, aiming to establish the state as a sports capital under Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s leadership. The day also witnessed the final match of the MLA Cup between United Shallang FC and Balbarian Sports Club Rongjeng.
