CM Sangma inaugurates Wahiajer Sports Complex, highlights surge in state’s sports infrastructure

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday, asserted that his government has invested more in sports infrastructure in the last five years than in the previous 45 years. Inaugurating the Wahiajer Multi-Sports Complex in West Jaintia Hills District, Sangma emphasised the government’s commitment to the youth.

Sangma stated, “More sports infrastructures have been created in the last five years, and in the next three to four years, even more will be established than in the last 45 years.” He highlighted the government’s focus on infrastructure investment in the past five to six years, doubling expenditure and tripling capital investment.

Among the achievements, Sangma mentioned the rapid construction of roads in Meghalaya, with nearly 35 per cent of the state’s roads being built in the last five years. He also highlighted ongoing projects for block office buildings, school constructions, and the renovation of healthcare facilities.

The Chief Minister announced that the next Meghalaya Games will be held in West Jaintia Hills District, expressing the government’s goal to make it one of the state’s biggest games. He promised felicitation for all state games medal winners, continuing scholarships for Olympic winners, and financial assistance for Meghalaya Games medalists.

Sangma outlined plans to intensify youth activities in arts, sports, entrepreneurship, and music. Additionally, he mentioned upcoming competitions in science, maths, and innovations to encourage a scientific temper among the youth. An Inter Constituency Football Tournament involving all 60 constituencies was also announced to promote regional cooperation, learning, and unity.

The inaugural function concluded with the final match of the 3rd Sniawbhalang Football Tournament at the Wahiajer Football Field and Synthetic Athletic Track Stadium, which has a capacity for 4300 spectators and spacious parking facilities. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and other ministers were present at the event.
