The personal security officer (PSO) of social activist Amita Sangma, who is also the prime witness in the assault of social activist Agnes Kharshiing in November, 2018 at Sohshrieh in East Jaintia Hills, has been withdrawn leaving her baffled.
A copy of the order from the office of the Additional Director General of Police, Special Branch Meghalaya on July 14 stated that the two PSOs will be “closed to Special Branch (headquarter), Meghalaya” while claiming that there is no imminent threat to her.
A copy of the order was sent to Sangma.
When contacted, Sangma told The Meghalayan, “I will decide on further course of action. In what manner is this done?”
It was on April 26 that the house guard of Sangma was withdrawn. Sangma informed that there were three house guards, and two PSOs and each one would take turns to guard.
Claiming that she does not feel safe, she said, “If I go out for hearing, shall I go alone? The security was provided at a time when we were in NEIGRIHMS. They have been there with me for nearly five years and now they are withdrawn.”
She was also suspicious that her pet dog had been poisoned. In a letter to the Superintendent of Police, Special Branch on June 27, she stated, “Last night, some criminals had poisoned my pet dog and it is evident that the perpetrators are nearing me as I am without any security guards.”
On November 8, 2018, Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma went to Sohshrieh to check on reports of illegal coal mining and illegal transport despite the ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal in 2014 when they were assaulted causing severe injuries.
