TURA, March 25: Thousands of Hindus across Garo Hills, including Tura celebrated the colorful spring festival of Holi on Monday, dancing to festive music, partaking in food and drink exchanges and smearing one another with colored powder on a day marked with revelry.
Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, marks the arrival of the spring season in India, Nepal and other South Asian countries as well as the diaspora. It celebrates the divine love between the Hindu god Krishna and his consort Radha, and signifies a time of rebirth and rejuvenation, embracing the positive and letting go of negative energy.
In several localities of Tura where the Hindu reside, men women and children mingled and shared moments of joy exchanging wishes and smearing one another with colored powder or using squirt guns to chase each other down streets in a joyous celebration.
The celebrations in Tura began the previous night, on Sunday, with kritans or devotional songs being sung to usher in the celebration.
Food and drinks were also another highlight of the festivities, particularly fruits and milk generously shared among the gathering.
