Committee On Tribal Unity condemns CBI, NIA, demands release of Kuki-Zo individuals*

In a press statement released on October 2, the COTU condemned the arrest of four individuals of the Kuki-Zo community in the Leimatak area, as well as the arrest of Seiminlun Gangte, raising concerns about the 'impartiality' of Union Home Ministry's involvement in a conflict-ridden state, allegedly siding with the narrative of the 'Valley' Chief Minister.

SHILLONG:

The Committee On Tribal Unity (COTU), has criticised the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the National Investigating Agency (NIA) for their perceived ‘one-sided’ approach to justice in recent arrests and has warned of an indefinite shutdown across Kangpokpi District in Manipur if the Union Home Ministry fails to address their demands within the stipulated 48-hour timeframe.

In a press statement released on October 2, the COTU condemned the arrest of four individuals of the Kuki-Zo community in the Leimatak area, as well as the arrest of Seiminlun Gangte, raising concerns about the ‘impartiality’ of Union Home Ministry’s involvement in a conflict-ridden state, allegedly siding with the narrative of the ‘Valley’ Chief Minister.

As a response to these developments, the COTU has declared an emergency shutdown on NH-37. This move is aimed at pressuring the relevant authorities to expedite the safe release of Satthang Kipgen from Bijang Village in New Keithelmanbi area, who was reportedly abducted.

Furthermore, the Committee has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Union Home Ministry, demanding the immediate release of all Kuki-Zo individuals who have been arrested. They also called for investigations into various cases involving ‘Meitei criminals’ to ensure natural justice. Several cases were highlighted, including the looting of 6000 arms and six lakhs of ammunition from the state arsenal, parading of two naked women, rape and murder of two Kuki-Zo girls, and the immolation of a seven-year-old and his mother in an ambulance.

The COTU has also urged authorities to arrest Kishan Shoram and state commandos allegedly involved in the massacre of three individuals in the Kangchup Area. Additionally, they have called for the arrest of Mairembam Romesh Mangang and his associates for the beheading of one person, with photo evidence to be provided to the central agency.
