Congress blames loss on turncoat legislators

“We had very little time to organise and identify winnable candidates. The votes also got split,” Congress Legislature Party leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh told reporters at the Congress Bhavan here on Wednesday.

SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has said that the poor performance of the party in the recently held Assembly elections was because all the legislators deserted the party.

“We had very little time to organise and identify winnable candidates. The votes also got split,” Congress Legislature Party leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh told reporters at the Congress Bhavan here on Wednesday.

However, Lyngdoh said, if analysed closely in the Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills region, the National People’s Party [NPP] was rejected as well, as they could only manage a paltry eight out of thirty-six seats.

“If you ask us that question, you can ask the NPP too, because they were practically rejected by the people of Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills,” the Mylliem legislator said.

Lyngdoh also pointed out that some of the Congress candidates lost by “small margins.”

It may be mentioned that none of the Congress legislators who won in 2018 contested India’s version of the“grand old party” in the recently concluded polls.

In 2021, the Congress split and out of the 17 legislators, 12 of them led by Mukul Sangma joined the All India Trinamool Congress.

Subsequently, the remaining five legislators too left Congress.

After the 2023 polls, the Congress won five seats – four from Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills and one from Garo Hills.
