Problems for the state Congress party seems to be compounding every passing day.
A day after former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora switched over to join the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), former secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Partha Pratim Bora joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), on April 18.
On the sidelines of the induction, AGP president and state agriculture minister, Atul Bora, said, “Congress is no more a political party, it has become a social club, like the Lions or the Rotary club. If you want to work for the nation, Congress is not the party. I want to appeal to the young people who are still in Congress, please leave the party and join NDA parties because like I said, it is not a party, it is a Gandhi club. You can’t work for the people being there.”
AGP working president Keshab Mahanta, general secretary Manoj Saikia, Sunil Deka, Tapan Das, Jitu Borgohain, other office bearers and workers were present during the induction ceremony held at the party’s office in Ambari, Guwahati, on Monday.
Stating that ‘Congress Mukt Bharat’ has become a reality as the party has lost all its glory and stature, Bora said, “The state is already ‘Congress Mukt’ and only a few seats are left and they too will be taken over by the NDA allies. The MPs and MLAs of the Congress are also planning to leave the party and due to anti-defection laws, have not been able to do that.”
Earlier on April 17, former MP Ripun Bora resigned from the Congress and departed to the All India Trinamool Congress.
In the resignation letter addressed to AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Ripun alleged that there was infighting among senior Congress leaders. Bora also alleged that a few senior leaders from Congress have maintained a secret understanding with the BJP.
