DC prohibits agitational programmes in EKH dist with immediate effect

The order said that such programmes, if not prohibited, lead to breach of peace and tranquility resulting in loss of life and property, and affecting the smooth conduct of the General Elections to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Constituency 2023.

SHILLONG:

With the Election Commission of India (ECI) imposing the Model Code of Conduct in view of the upcoming Assembly Elections in Meghalaya, the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills district has prohibited any sort of agitational programmes in the district with immediate effect.

In an order issued on January 18, District Magistrate, and District Election Officer, Sibhi Chakravarthy Sadhu said that individual or organisations cannot hold any kind of agitations in any form in the district as such programmes will likely to create law and order problem.

The order said that such programmes, if not prohibited, lead to breach of peace and tranquility resulting in loss of life and property, and affecting the smooth conduct of the General Elections to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Constituency 2023.

Notably, the ECI on January 18 announced the election schedule for the Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura Assembly Elections, with the state going to polls on February 27.
