Dead fishes found floating in West Khasi Hills’ Risiang river

Pynshai Kharbani, the village secretary of Risiang, informed that footprints found near the riverbank point towards miscreant activity.

SHILLONG:

Villagers of Risiang village in the West Khasi Hills district found several dead fishes floating in Risiang River, on March 2.

Suspecting it to be a case of poisoning, the villagers said that some unidentified miscreants may have poured poisonous chemicals in the river which killed the fishes.

Pynshai Kharbani, the village secretary of Risiang, informed that such incidents have also occurred in the past. “The village dorbar has prohibited the illegal killing of fishes in water bodies with explosives, fishing nets or poisonous chemicals,” he said, adding that footprints found near the riverbank point towards miscreant activity.

Condemning this act, the village authority issued a warning, “If found, they will be dealt with strictly”. A complaint will soon be filed in the Nongstoin police station, he informed.
