Death due to floods in Assam mounts to 24; marginal improvement in situation

A total of 7,19,425 populations of 2,095 villages in 22 districts have been affected in the first wave of floods and till May 21, the death toll in the state was 18.

The death toll in the first wave of floods has mounted to 24 with the fresh death of six more people on May 22, an official bulletin of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

Fresh deaths were reported from four persons at Kampur (Nagaon) and one each in Silchar (Cachar) and Doboka (Hojai).

However, the overall flood situation has improved on Sunday with the water level in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries receding, the ASDMA said.

Kopili is flowing above the danger level at Dharamtul and Kampur in Nagaon district while Disang is flowing above the danger level at Nanglamuraghat in Sivasagar district.

The affected districts are Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), West Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur and Udalguri.

Nagaon is the worst affected with 3,45,838 in 237 villages under Kampur, Nagaon and Raha revenue circles followed by Cachar 2,29,275 of 490 villages under Katigorah, Udharbond, Silchar, Lakhipur and Sonai revenue circles.

A total of 95,473.51 hectares of crop areas have been affected by floods. Two hundred sixty-nine relief camps and 152 relief distribution centres have been opened in all affected areas. A total of 91,518 inmates are staying in the relief camps.

In view of the current flood and landslide situation in the state, the ASDMA along with all the stakeholders expedited the response and recovery services to create additional resources and support systems for the severely affected districts.

2000 litres of diesel and 12 MT of food items have been air transported from Jorhat to three remote places Laisong, Khepre and Mazidisa of Dima Hasao district on Sunday.

An IoT based water level monitoring system namely “Jaltarangini” has been tested in Dibrugarh with technological support from NIC rollout which will further improve the precision of flood forecasting and early warning system.

State water resources minister Pijush Hazarika on Sunday visited Nagaon district to take the stock of the flood situation.

Hazarika along with Nagaon MNLA Rupak Sarma visited Milanpur, Badyatup, Senshuwa, Haldiati. During his visit, Hazarika asked the officials to step up the construction work of a PRD road which was washed away in the Milanpur area.
