Death toll in Assam floods reaches 174, central team completes visit to flood-hit areas

GUWAHATI:

The death toll in the Assam floods has mounted to 174 with the death of one more person in Cachar district, even as the Inter-Ministerial Central Team completed its visit to the flood-hit areas on July 2.

The central team which arrived here on June 30 completed its visit to the flood-affected areas on Saturday without visiting the worst-affected Nagaon district or any district of Upper Assam and North Assam.

The team was divided into two groups to visit Barak Valley and two Lower Assam districts on Friday and Saturday.

As per the scheduled programme, the first team of IMCT visited various flood-affected areas in Cachar district and talked with the district administration for damage assessment of the recent flood and assured of a quick response to restore the damages.

The second group of IMCT visited water supply schemes, embankment breach points and P&RD bundh breach points of Paschim Nalbari and Banekuchi revenue circles in Nalbari district. The team also visited the embankment breach points and houses damaged in Sarupeta revenue circle in Bajali district for necessary damage assessment.

Further, the team has visited the road damage areas and other flood-affected areas of Sarthebari revenue circle in Barpeta district for necessary damage assessment.

After visiting the flood-affected districts, both the teams of Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) interacted and discussed their observations with chief secretary Jishnu Barua along with other senior officials of the state government, Indian Army, Indian Air force (IAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), NHAI, NHIDCL and FCI on the flood situation of the state at CS conference hall.

After a detailed discussion with the IMCT, the chief secretary requested the team to submit a suitable report to the Central government so that the state can get more central funds immediately.

According to the official bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 22,17,778 populations of 1,934 villages under 77 revenue circles of 27 districts were still under flood water.

A total of 50714.18 hectares of crop area is still inundated, the ASDMA said.

Nagaon is the worst affected district followed by Morigaon and Barpeta districts.

In Nagaon, 3,78,940 populations of 238 villages under Kaliabor, Nagaon, Kampur, Raha, Samaguri and Rupahi revenue circles have been affected.

In Barpeta, 2,20,815 populations of 317 villages under Barpeta, Baghbar, Kalgachia, Chenga and Sarthebari have been affected.

In Morigaon district, 1,73,849 population of 310 villages under Mikirbheta, Morigaon, Bhuragaon, Mayong and Laharighat revenue circles have been affected by the second wave of floods.

The flood situation in Barak Valley is slightly improving even as hundreds of villages are still reeling under flood water.

In Cachar district, 1,23,1938 populations of 574 villages under Udharbond, Silchar, Sonai, Lakhipur and Katigorah revenue circles have been affected by the deluge.

In Hailakandi district, 42,450 populations of 23 villages under Katlicherra, Lala, Hailakandi and Algapur revenue circles have been affected.

In Karimganj district, 5,842 population of 76 villages under Nilambazar, Badarpur, Patherkandi, Karimganj and RK Nagar revenue circles have been affected.

404 relief camps and 138 relief distribution centres are still functioning in affected areas with 2,77,335 inmates.

According to the report of CWC( Central Water Commission), the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Dhubri, Tezpur and Neamatighat, Kopili at Dharamtul, Disang at Nanglamuraghat and Burhidihing is flowing above the danger level at Chenimari(Khowang).

27 districts have been affected by the deluge: Bajali, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur.
