Death toll in Assam floods touches 121 even as situation improves

According to a Central Water Commission report, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Dhubri, Kopili, Dharamtul and Kampur.

GUWAHATI:

The death toll in flood and landslide related incidents in Assam has touched 121 with four more people reported to have lost their lives on June 25.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) informed that the four recent deaths were reported from Barpeta, Cachar, Darrang and Golaghat districts. As of April 6, 100 people had died due to the floods and 17 had perished due to landslides.

The ASDMA also said that the overall flood situation in Assam has improved though 25,10,989 people from 2,894 villages under 79 revenue circles in 27 districts continue to remain affected by the second wave of floods. It revealed that a total of 80346.28 hectares of crop land has been affected by floods in the last 24 hours.

The affected districts are Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), West Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur and Udalguri.

Due to the floods, 637 relief camps and 259 relief distribution centres have been opened in the affected districts, and a total of 2,33,271 people have been taking shelter in them.

To aid those affected, 57.55 MT of GR items including rice, packaged drinking water, food packets, wheat bran for animals, etc., were air transported from Guwahati and Jorhat to Silchar on Saturday.

According to a Central Water Commission (CWC) report, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Dhubri, Kopili, Dharamtul and Kampur.

Given the flood situation, teams led by ministers and supported by the senior secretaries will visit the affected areas to oversee the damage and make assessments.

The Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) of the entire state will also be arranged for damage assessment.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel of Itanagar and Bhubaneswar as well as prepositioned NDRF teams in Assam along with the Indian Army, SDRF, Fire & Emergency personnel, Assam Police and AAPDA MITRA Volunteers are helping the district administrations in rescue operations and relief distributions.
