Foundation stone laid for revamp of Laitumkhrah market

SHILLONG:

The foundation stone of the re-development of Laitumkhrah Municipal Market was unveiled by the Urban Affairs Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar in the presence of local MLA, M A Lyngdoh and senior officers of the Urban Affairs Department and the Shillong Municipal Board.

The re-development of the market is being implemented by Shillong Municipal Board and is expected to be completed within 24 months from the date of commencement of work which was September 22, 2021.

It is funded by Shillong Smart City Limited at a cost of Rs. 28,84,62,139.

Speaking on the occasion, Dhar said that a long-cherished dream of the people of Laitumkhrah has been fulfilled with the laying of the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Laitumkhrah Municipal Market and lauded the cooperation of all
stakeholders in ensuring the commencement of the project. Reiterating the importance of teamwork, he urged all involved to ensure the timely completion of the project for the benefit of the people at large.

While Lyngdoh has urged the stakeholders to work towards speedy completion of the building as she maintained that the market is the main engine of economic growth of the people of Laitumkhrah.

It may be mentioned that the shopkeepers are currently housed at a temporary shopping complex and will be shifted once the new market is ready.

Speaking to a professional J. Chyne said, “I was always peeved by how dirty and smelly Laitumkhrah market was. It was such a problem to navigate the market in the rain especially where chicken was sold. I am relieved that the market is being renovated
and it is now looking much cleaner and hygienic.”

While another person said that the price of essential commodities is priced very high in comparison to Iewduh.
