East Jaintia Hills Police seize explosives, arrest 4

In all, the police seized 26 boxes containing gelatin sticks, four boxes containing electronic detonators and four mobile phones.

KHLIEHRIAT:

The East Jaintia Hills Police seized gelatin sticks weighing approximately 650 kgs along with 200 electronic detonators and arrested four people on January 16 during a late night raid at Jalaphet Bri Sumer.

“Based on credible sources, we got information that around three to four people were spotted roaming suspiciously in a jungle area of Jalaphet Bri Sumer and that some of them were carrying boxes. We immediately sent our teams to the forest area,” Jagpal Singh Dhonao, EJH SP, informed.

A joint raid was conducted under the leadership of Addl. Superintendent of Police, B Jyrwa, Superintendent of Police, K Pdahkasiej, In-charge Umpleng Anti-Dacoity (AD) Camp and SI B Marbaniang of Saipung Police Station along with staff.

During the raid, four youths were seen sleeping inside a cowshed with some carton boxes. The police detained the youths and inspected the boxes, leading to the discovery of explosives. In all, the police seized 26 boxes containing gelatin sticks, four boxes containing electronic detonators and four mobile phones.

The EJH SP further said that with the upcoming Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election, there is strong suspicion that the explosives might be used to disrupt the peaceful conduct of polling.

The four youths who have been arrested were identified as Point Chyrmang (30), Nikalai Chyrmang (21), Mij Chyrmang (22), Shanbor Chyrmang (22).

A case has been registered under Saipung PS Case No. 2(1)2023 u/s 120B IPC R/W Sec 5 ES Act, and investigation is on to trace the point of origin and destination of the explosives, the SP informed.
