Shillong:
The Election Commission (EC) has started running the state’s voter list through the Electoral Rolls Services Net (ERONet) to detect duplicate, dual or bogus voters by analysing “clone” entries, photos and names.
To verify the same, the state election department has implemented reduplication software – ERONet – to check dual entries in the voters’ list.
Talking to The Meghalayan, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state, FR Kharkongor, said that manual enrolment has not phased out as the process of continuous updating is going on for those citizens who were not able to enrol themselves during the recently concluded Special Summary Revision of 2022.
The CEO further added that if a name is registered in more than one place, then the system will restrict a dual entry.
‘’Manual Enrolment Citizens now have the option to also apply online through https://www.nvsp.in if using a computer or ‘Voter Helpline App’ if using a mobile phone,’’ he said.
When asked how this software is going to function, he informed that the system tries to match similarities in names, relationships, age, and address and indicates a list of possible duplicate electors. This list is then handed over to the Booth Level Officer (BLO) who will perform field verification and report back to the Electoral Registration Officer, who will take further action on the Electoral Roll.
‘’Sometimes a citizen while shifting to a new residence in another district or state, might register as a voter in the new place without deleting its names from the old address. In such cases, the software will help in detecting those anomalies and correctly inform the citizen to have the name removed from the Electoral Roll of the old address,’’ added Kharkongor.
