EKH SP directs vehicle owners to remove retrofitted exhaust pipes

In an order issued on January 20, the SP sad that there has been a rise in the number of vehicles (both two wheelers and four wheelers) retrofitted with loud exhaust pipes causing noise pollution in the city especially at unearthly hours.

SHILLONG:

The Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills district has directed all vehicle owners who have retrofitted their exhaust pipes to get them removed and replace them with original exhaust pipes, and those violating the order will be penalised as per the provisions of law.

In an order issued on January 20, the SP said that there has been a rise in the number of vehicles (both two wheelers and four wheelers) retrofitted with loud exhaust pipes causing noise pollution in the city especially at unearthly hours.

The order further said that such exhausts violate Section 182A (4)/190(2) of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, and causes inconvenience to the residents of the city, including children and senior citizens.

“The vehicles riders have modified the noise mufflers/silencers so much that a vehicle being driven can be heard hundreds of metres away whereby causing immense discomfort to the old, aged and infirm persons as well as the young and other persons who may require silence,” the order from the SP’s office stated.
