TURA:
Former minister of Meghalaya, Norwin B Sangma, whose family were pioneers in running the first private printing press in Tura, passed away from old age on Wednesday night. He was 84.
Late Sangma was a two term legislator from Dadenggre constituency in West Garo Hills and also served as the minister for Home (Prisons) during his political career which took off in 1983 when he won from Dadenggre after resigning from his government post of block development officer.
Born in Ampati town in 1938, his family shifted to Tura for education purposes. He cleared his class X board exams from one of the oldest government institutions of Tura- Govt Multi-purpose School and went on to graduate from Guwahati Cotton College.
His father Narayan M Marak was the first person to run his own printing press which continued to serve the region for decades, even going on to publish its own monthly and later weekly vernacular newspapers successfully.
