Ex-service man wanted for attempted rape in Assam, still absconding

An FIR was filed and the police registered a case, but the victim's husband alleges that they are not taking the case seriously.

GUWAHATI:

A retired soldier of the Indian Army, who is wanted for assault and attempted rape, has been absconding after he was named in an FIR on July 29 following the incident in Lower Assam’s Kamrup district.

The incident had taken place at Ghilabari village under Boko Police Station on the night of July 27 when Subedar (retired) Labanya Prasad Mazumdar of Assam Regiment along with one of his aides entered the house of the victim, who was asleep. When she opened the door, the soldier started to abuse her, taking advantage of the absence of her husband in the house.

Mazumdar’s aide fled from the scene and the situation forced the victim’s daughter to flee to a neighbour’s house for help. As Mazumdar tried to abuse her, the woman cried out for help, and when the people of the area heard her, they rushed to her house. Upon hearing them, Mazumdar fled from the spot.

An FIR was filed and the police registered case No 342/22 under section 506/448/511/427/345/34 of IPC, but the victim’s husband alleges that the police are not taking the case seriously.

“The police are neglecting the case. When we asked about the status of the case, the investigating officer Saddam Hussain misbehaved with us. We have reasons to believe that the police are behind Mazumdar’s disappearance,” he said.

The victim said that Mazumdar also threatened them, “Mazumdar is a powerful man of the village. Before he left the place, he threatened us not to inform the police or he would kidnap me and my daughter.”

Phanindra Chandra Nath, officer-in-charge, Boko Police Station on the other hand said, “The case is under investigation. We are still looking for the man. He has been absconding till date.”
