First lady of state calls for preservation of loin loom weaving tradition

Misra was speaking at the screening of documentary ‘celebrating loin loom weaving through loin loom weaving of Arunachal Pradesh’ at Assam Rifles Headquarters in Shillong, on October 6.

SHILLONG:

The First Lady of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, Neelam Misra, has called upon the people to preserve and promote the traditional loin loom weaving tradition indigenous to the North Eastern Region (NER).

Misra was speaking at the screening of documentary ‘celebrating loin loom weaving through loin loom weaving of Arunachal Pradesh’ at Assam Rifles Headquarters in Shillong, on October 6, where she said that the rich tradition of loin loom weaving is prevalent only in North Eastern Region, and concerted effort must be put to encourage local weavers to carry forward the tradition.

The First Lady of the state said that as most of the weavers of the NE region are women, loin loom weaving facilitates women empowerment and thereby guarantees socio-economic development of the people. She said that the loin loom weaving tradition will contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ s vision of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.

The First Lady of the state stressed that the products of the tradition of local weavers of NER must go from ‘local to global’ and must be the fashion statement of the region.

Pushpa Nair, wife of Director General of Assam Rifles Lt. General PC Nair and President, Assam Rifles Wives’ Welfare Association were among the others who attended the screening.
