First surgery on Covid patient conducted in Tura hospital

TURA:

In a first of its kind, doctors at Tura’s Civil Hospital conducted an emergency surgery on a patient who happened to be unvaccinated and was Covid positive.

The medical team led by Dr Lee Roger Ch Marak, MS, Mch, Pediatric Surgeon undertook the emergency life saving surgery for intestinal perforation on a 42-year-old patient who had not been vaccinated, was already positive for Covid and needed medical treatment urgently.

“There were risk factors during the conduct of the surgery with general anesthesia because the patient’s lung is intubated with a tube and there is an outpouring of more viruses to the atmosphere. This increases the risk of infecting all the operation staff present in the operation theater,” pointed out surgeon Dr Lee Roger Marak.

He said that besides being risky, such an operation on an infected person is very challenging for both the Anaesthesiologist and the surgeon conducting the operation.

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh has lauded the success of the medical team and the risk taken to conduct the emergency operation on a Covid patient.

The medical team included, besides Dr Lee Roger, Anaesthesiologist Dr Stevie Jaseng N Sangma, assistant surgeon Dr Bonse R Sangma, junior nursing officers Silsila R Sangma and Astik Tserenga, OT technicians Chechong Ch Marak and Markash Marak.
