SHILLONG:

After the police quiz, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Dundee Khongsit, on November 14, warned the state government not to push them and that the police summons are like “free coaching classes”.

Speaking to reporters after his questioning at the Sadar Police Station, Khongsit said, “Don’t push us to the wall because if we do not have any other option left we will have to confront.”

Khongsit said that the summoning of the leaders by the police is like a “free coaching class”, that the government is giving them so that they can strengthen their principles, streamline the way they are working as a pressure group and also address the issue of unemployment in the state.

“This is the issue of life and death of the people of the state. We, as members of the FKJGP, are taking this responsibility upon our shoulders the problems being faced by parents after their hard work of educating their children,” the FKJGP president said.

Khongsit also urged citizens not to spread videos of the incident without verifying the facts even as he thanked the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, for clarifying that there were no serious injuries during the October 28 violence.

He also informed that the FKJGP will hold public meetings and programmes to spread awareness for the youths on the issue of unemployment.

It may be mentioned that earlier, police questioned FKJGP general secretary, Eldie Lyngdoh, senior vice-president Elton Warjri, vice-president Kitboklang Nongphlang and organising secretary Khrawkupar Nongsiej on the same incident.

Police have so far arrested four persons involved in physical assaults and vandalism during the FKJGP march. At least two of the arrested were FKJGP members.

The arrests were made under relevant sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act following several raids in East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi districts.

Earlier, Khongsit had questioned the police for treating its arrested members as cadres of militant outfits.

He wanted to know why police had arrested its members during the wee hours.

Police have filed cases at Shillong Sadar and Laitumkhrah police stations.
