FKJGP shuts down 5 factories for not obtaining trading license

A reply to an RTI query revealed that the factories did not possess proper papers from the authority, following which the FKJGP conducted a surprise inspection of these factories at the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

Nongpoh:

The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Tuesday shut down five factories at Umiam in Ri Bhoi district, for not obtaining trading licenses from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

A reply to an RTI query revealed that the factories did not possess proper papers from the authority, following which the FKJGP conducted a surprise inspection of these factories at the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

During the inspection, it was found that the factories did not obtain a trading license nor did the labourers have labour license from the KHADC.

The Federation also condemned the KHADC and its Executive Member in charge of Trade for the illegal establishment of factories.

Speaking to reporters, Shanlang Diengdoh, general secretary of the FKJGP, North Khasi Hills District, said these factories have also deprived job opportunities for the locals by bringing labourers from other states.

“We condemn the KHADC and the EM for failing to take any initiative in checking such factories running without any legal documents and for failing to utilise the enforcement personnel for the purpose,” he said while demanding prompt action from the authorities concerned failing which they will be compelled to take drastic action.
