Garo Hills poacher who killed endangered barking deer caught

Tura, March 12: A poacher who shot and killed a highly endangered barking deer from a forest in Garo Hills has been arrested by the Wildlife Department from South West Garo Hills district on Tuesday.

The accused, Sukumar Rema (52 years) hailing from New Harigaon village, near Mukdangra (Garobadha region), was taken into custody from his home after a week of sustained investigation by wildlife officials.
The accused had poached the rare male barking deer for consumption of its meat and sale of its skin.
Wildlife teams have recovered a portion of the carcass from the house of the accused and are now on the lookout for other co-accused of the poacher.
Poaching cases in Garo Hills had literally dropped to zero point during the two years of the Covid pandemic helping the endangered wild life population to once again thrive, but post return to normalcy poaching has once again resumed, putting wildlife personnel on high alert.
