TURA:
A delegation of the Garo Students Union from East Garo Hills  met with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma during his visit to Williamnagar on August 21 to submit a petition seeking the establishment of a cell of the Meghalaya Public Services Commission (MPSC) in the district headquarters for conducting examinations.
Currently, only Tura in West Garo Hills has an MPSC cell which caters to candidates from all across the five districts of the region.
The student delegation, led by GSU east zone president Saljrang T R Marak, pointed out that poor students and candidates from the remote areas of the district face immense hardships in having to go to either Tura or Shillong to appear in the MPSCÂ -conducted examinations and interviews.
To drive home this demand, the student members interacted with multiple locality leaders of Williamnagar and other areas of the district and also pointed out that the district has completed 28 years of its establishment but remains without an MPSC Cell.
Another demand put forth by the student union was the need for restructuring and reorganising the District Institute of Education and Training with emphasis on East Garo Hills to raise the bar on the performance of education, particularly school education.
