TURA:
Remembering with pride and gratitude its visionary founding members, Tura Government College celebrated its 65 foundation day with a daylong elaborate function and an evening of cultural extravaganza at its college premises.
Achieving a milestone this day with a myriad of successful politicians, bureaucrats, scholars, industrialists etc as its alumni the prestigious institution, Tura Government College was founded on September 9, 1959, by visionary leaders and educationalists.
The elaborate function saw as its distinguished guests its alumni Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma and his wife, Minister, Housing, PHE etc Marcuise N Marak and his wife, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma and his wife, Chairman Khadi Board Subir R Marak, Adviser, Education department Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang and Secretary, education department Ambrose Marak amongst a host of other dignitaries.
The day long programme saw felicitation of the college’s alumni guests and also the presentation of mementos to the family members of the founding members.
Among the founding remembers remembered and honored with the presentation of mementos to their family members were Lt.Captain Williamson A Sangma, Lt. Mody K Marak, Lt. Simison R Sangma, I Ch Momin, Lt. E R Marak, Lt. Sodini G Momin, Mon Bahadur Newar, Lt Ravilal Jayshree and Lt. B Lohar.
During the day a book authored by Rhinkle Marak, ‘Galwangreni Aski’, was released by Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma accompanied by other dignitaries. Later in the evening a cultural extravaganza was organized at the college’s auditorium.
Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma expressed regards from the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma who is attending the G20 Summit at the nation’s Capital, New Delhi. He stated that it was a reason for the citizens of the great nation to be proud as the G20 summit was being hosted by India. Speaking of his alma-matter he stated that it was a joyous occasion looking back at all the achievements the Tura Government College has accomplished over these last 65 years.
Reminiscing his student days at Tura Government College he informed that though he could not finish his educational pursuits it was in Tura Government College that cupid’s arrow struck and he met his soul mate.
Terming the momentous occasion as a day of remembrance, a day of honoring and a day of celebration the Speaker expressed gratitude to the founding members of the prestigious institution. Sangma informed that in honor of the institution a theater in the Shillong International Center for Performing Arts would be named after the college’s former Principal Lt. Lendrid D Shira.
Among others who spoke at the occasion were PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma and Tura Government College Principle Terence Marak.
