Going beyond duty: Aizawl teacher garners praise for delivering mid-day meals amidst pandemic

A photo of primary school headmistress won accolades across various social media platforms with people appreciating her for delivering rations to the needy amidst the pandemic

AIZAWL:

In today’s age of social media, even small deeds get highlighted in minutes. And, if it’s a good deed, it takes seconds to inspire people to follow suit. Recently, a photo of Zoramhlumi, the headmistress of a government-run primary school at Chawlhhmun locality in Aizawl, broke the Internet after a photo of her delivering mid-day meals to one of her students under home isolation, got viral on the World Wide Web.

Clicked by an onlooker, the photo featured her, knocking at one of her students’ doors holding a basketful of food with the caption – “A dedicated headmistress of a primary school in Mizoram goes door to door delivering rations and essential commodities to her students who were down with Covid and under home isolation.”

The photo won accolades across various social media platforms with people appreciating her for delivering rations to the needy amidst the pandemic.

“Even when schools were closed due to the pandemic, students were receiving mid-day meals. We did home delivery for students who could not come to school as some students tested positive for Covid and had to undergo home isolation,” Zoramhluni said, adding that it was her duty to ensure every student was provided with the mid-day meal. She informed that the photo was clicked when she was delivering the meal to one of the three siblings down with Covid. “All the three siblings are students of our school,” she said.

She, however, was surprised when the photo got viral. “Someone took my photo and posted it on social media. It looked as though I was the only one delivering mid-day meal to our students. My colleagues have been doing the same since the schools were closed due to the pandemic,” she said.

She also informed that after the third Covid wave hit Mizoram, her school building was used as a Community Covid Care Centre.

“So, we distributed mid-day meal at a suitable location from where students got their share. We delivered it to students who could not come due to Covid-19 infection,” she said.
