Govt allots Rs 50 L to improve police infrastructure

The works would be taken up “on priority basis” by the district level committees which would be headed by the respective deputy commissioner, said cabinet minister James Sangma.

SHILLONG:

The government will allot Rs 50 lakh for repairing and renovation of police stations, police outposts and anti-dacoity camps in each of the 12 districts of the state.

To be done under the Police Infrastructure Renovation Fund (PIRF), the decision was approved by the state cabinet, on August 9, informed cabinet minister James Sangma.

“The government has realised that, for past several years, critical police infrastructure is in need of immediate but minor repair and renovation work.’ But because of the process involved, they have not received funding affecting the service delivery of the police force,” he said, after attending the cabinet meeting.

James further informed that the kinds of works which will be taken up under the PIRF include urgent repair of existing police stations, outposts, fire service stations, anti-dacoity camps and battalions.

The works would be taken up “on priority basis” by the district level committees which would be headed by respective deputy commissioners and have the superintendent of police, commandant of the battalion and project director and executive engineer of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) as members, he said.

“This would entail an amount of Rs 50 lakh which would be placed at the disposal of the PIRF for each district to the committee headed by the deputy commissioners of the respective districts,” Sangma said.

The minister added that other kinds of works which can be taken up under PIRF would include construction of toilets, drinking water facility, waiting rooms, painting and electrical works, among others, which too are deemed critical for the functioning of police stations, outposts and AD camps.

Meanwhile, the cabinet has also approved the speech to be read out during the Independence Day celebrations in the state.
