Govt comes to Lady Keane College’s rescue

SHILLONG:

Bringing some relief to the Lady Keane College, which was asked by Shillong Cantonment Board to pay up Rs 45 lakh as “property tax” for it being located on defence land, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, on August 10, said that the government will do everything on its part to ensure the prestigious college doesn’t have to function under “anybody’s” pressure.

Stating that the governing body of the college will sit and decide on the necessary steps need to be taken on the matter in the next couple of days, Rymbui said, “The state government will also do everything to ensure that the Lady Keane college will function without pressure from anybody.”

He, however, said that the governing body of the college is yet to officially inform the state government on this regard.

“On Tuesday, I had spoken to the principal of the college on a personal front and enquired about the issue. He explained to me that this is the first time that such a thing has happened and the Lady Keane College, which was established since 1934, have all the records to prove that they are not in the cantonment area,” said Rymbui.
