SHILLONG:
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has refrained from commenting on the political development in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), maintaining that matters related to autonomous district councils were internal and the state government does not intervene in their political affairs.
He said, “It is an autonomous body and a separate government. Even politically, it has its own dynamics internally which are complicated in nature. We (government) don’t intervene in the day-to-day functioning of the district councils.”
The KHADC witnessed a change of guard in leadership with the collapse of the United Democratic Party (UDP)-led Executive Committee (EC) on the first day of the Summer (Budget) Session of the Council on Monday.
This paved the way for the formation of a new EC, led by the National People’s Party (NPP), in coalition with Congress, with NPP MDC from Sohryngkham Pyniaid Sing Syiem as the new Chief Executive Member.
Sangma said, “There are complications. A lot of the things that happen in the council are not in our knowledge, such as their internal politics, the different situations they face from day to day between MDCs and EC. Challenges are always there and it is up to the CEM to manage and handle things.”
When asked about the unhappiness of the UDP chief on the political development, Sangma said “…obviously it is not what any of us would have expected, we would have wanted to be resolved in a proper manner but there are complications and I guess it required whatever that had to be done.”
