Govt to pay compensation release compensation for electrocution victim; Mondal

Shillong, Feb 22: Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal on Thursday assured that necessary compensation will be given to the family of a night guard, who died of electrocution at the sub-station located downstream of Stage-I Umiam dam.

“I personally took up the matter with the MeECL and can assure that necessary compensation be given to the family of the victim,” Mondal said in his reply to a call attention notice moved by VPP MLA from Mawlai Brightstarwell Marbaniang in the Assembly here.

He said (L) Kyrshanborlang Muktieh, a night guard working with M/s ITD Cementation India Limited was electrocuted on January 29, after he came in contact with the live HT side of the distribution transformer after he entered into the sub-station premises.

Mondal said (L) Muktieh was not an employee of MeECL but he was working as security guard with the construction firm, ITD Cementation India Limited, which is entrusted for the dam rehabilitation and improvement work of the Umiam Stage I dam which is under progress.

An FIR was lodged at Mawlai police station and the police report is awaited.

He said in the meantime, the Accident Report dated January 29, was submitted to the senior electrical inspector, government of Meghalaya to conduct a thorough enquiry so that the actual reason for the accident can be ascertained.

He said that the report of the senior electrical inspector concluded that Muktieh was found lying in an unconscious condition inside the distribution substation by the police, who were performing duty at the main dam who immediately informed the personnel of ITD Cementation India Ltd.

The report stated that from the enquiry report it was ascertained that (L) Muktieh was performing duty (shift duty), at the sentry post, Umiam under the company ITD Cementation (India Limited) and entered the sub-station premises on his own by unauthorized means. The actual cause of death can be ascertained only after the report from the police and the medical officer is received, it added.

Further, Mondal informed that the MeECL has asked that on humanitarian grounds, that M/s ITD Cementation (India Limited) should immediately expedite the release of financial assistance such as EPF (Employees provident fund) and insurance to the next of kin of (L) Muktieh since he died while he was on duty. Accordingly, direction has been given to the contractor to take up the matter immediately as per existing rules.
