Guv against forcing Hindi

SHILLONG:

Governor Satya Pal Malik on Friday asserted that Hindi as a subject should not be imposed upon students.

“It (Hindi subject) should not be imposed,” Malik told journalists when asked on the Centre’s decision to make Hindi compulsory up to class X in the Northeastern states.

He, however, said, “But yes, up to a certain class it can be, up to VIII you can make it necessary and you make it open.”

While chairing the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee in New Delhi recently, the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, had informed that all the eight states of the North East have agreed to make Hindi compulsory in schools up to Class X.

Shah had also said 22,000 Hindi teachers have been recruited in these states even as he informed that nine tribal communities of the region have converted their dialects’ scripts to Devanagari.
