Harnessing Wind

By The Editor

Demand for energy is increasing day-by-day and hence tapping different natural resources is of prime importance while at the same time preserving the environment. Wind is one such source which possesses natural characteristic of blowing in many patterns. Scientific observations made from meteorological ground stations and earth satellites reveal about wind movement at different speeds causing storms, cyclones and hurricanes, etc. Scientists discovered that the wind usually moves in horizontal manner relative to the rotating surface of the earth and responds to certain well-established physical stimuli. Air has weight and so it presses down. The more air there is above any place on the earth’s surface, the greater the air pressure is. So construction and urban design procedures are very cautious of the likely effects of new man-made structures on local wind circulation like narrow city-streets and high buildings. It is quite unsafe to allow windows to open in tall buildings or even of moderate heights because of powerful gusts of wind. Engineers too who design big bridges and dams always are to take note of air turbulence they are likely to cause.

Wind industry is thriving because of potentialities for expansion to meet rising demand for power. Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) in its annual report on March 28, 2023 hinted at record installations in both onshore and offshore markets by 2027. So policymakers are alert for immediate action urging government and private companies to need not delay further before energy crisis occurs which may create panic and catastrophy. Decision made by policymakers will have great impact on whether the world will be able to carry out energy transition within stipulated time and the cost involved. Authorities therefore need to motivate and incentivize much because if they remain insensitive and complacent as they had been during past year 2022 the economy will suffer and public will be hard-hit. Therefore the task ought to be prioritised urgently and accelerated over coming years in order to achieve targets. Ben Backwell, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GWEC said: “The message for policymakers from this year’s Global Wind Report is clear, namely, that it is time to double down on your ambition and deliver the support that will secure clean energy in future dawning in front of us”.

Wind energy creates jobs, builds new industries, delivers clean and secure energy while ensuring climate goals are met and net zero is achieved. Industries must comply with policy measures set by government not only to secure energy transition successfully but more importantly for preserving environment and maintaining healthy atmosphere. Global collaboration is highly essential to enhance and de-risk supply of destructive materials in order to ensure green economic revolution at this crucial period. Taking all these into consideration, the best and realistic option to limit global temperature increase is to rely more on renewable energy.
