HC asks govt to resolve ‘political interference’

The court said though it appears that things have improved, there does not appear to be any long-term solution in sight.

SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya High Court on June 17 asked the state government to resolve the perceived “political interference” standing in the way of a long-term solution into the garbage issue in Jowai, the district headquarters of West Jaintia Hills District.

“The State should take a more proactive role, at least to resolve the perceived political interference,” said a two-member-bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W Diengdoh while hearing a PIL filed by the Synjuk Ki Waheh Chnong Jowai.

The court said though it appears that things have improved, there does not appear to be any long-term solution in sight.

“There is a perception of the court that political considerations may be standing in the way of any long-term solution being found,” it said while asserting “It is hoped that better sense would prevail on persons trying to put an impediment to a long-term solution or the identification of the appropriate site.”

On the ground, however, the petitioner admits that things have improved and the Jowai Municipal Board informed that there is now regular removal of garbage and a temporary site has been identified and the same is being used.

The next hearing will be held on July 15.
