SHILLONG:
The Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya has expressed hope that the school buses would start plying immediately upon the schools reopening. Once security measures in such buses are put in place by the state, parents and guardians would be encouraged to allow their wards to use the buses.
Hearing a PIL on February 14, the court said that the state should appoint personnel to monitor the extent of ease in congestion as a result of the proposed measure. Other measures as indicated in the report filed on the last occasion should be taken as per the specific timelines.
Pursuant to the last order of February 7, 2023, the state reported that the immediate measure that could be implemented is to roll out school buses and the state expects that at least 450 private cars will be taken off the roads in the event the school buses are appropriately used.
According to the state, such measures will be implemented immediately and results should show by the end of the month.
The court stated that it is a positive step taken by the state and even if 250 to 300 cars are removed from the Shillong roads that would ease the traffic congestion to a great extent.
The matter is listed on March 14, 2023.
