Headman from other tribes possible if Himas Acts allow: KHADC

Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) in-charge Elaka, P NSyiem was speaking in the context of Garo headmen taking up the role of running the matters of the village in Raid Marwet under Hima Mylliem.

SHILLONG:

Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) in-charge Elaka, P N Syiem has said that it depends on the Acts of the different Himas, whether a person from another tribe can be part of the dorbar shnong.

Syiem was speaking in the context of Garo headmen taking up the role of running the matters of the village in Raid Marwet under Hima Mylliem.

“There are certain Himas which allow individuals from other tribal communities to run the affairs of the village. But in the end these will be under the watch of the respective Himas. They cannot function independently because the powers given to them are as per the Sanad given by the Himas,” Syiem told reporters.

Recently, there were allegations that traditional heads including Garo headmen were involved in selling off land to people from outside the state.

The Deputy CEM in-charge Elaka said that on the complaint of the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) against the Garo headmen in Raid Marwet who allegedly sold off land to individuals from outside the state, the Executive Committee of the KHADC will summon the Syiem of Hima Mylliem and Syiem of Raid Marwet and residents of the area and after that a decision on the matter will be taken.

He said that the Executive Committee of the KHADC will not take any hasty decision on the matter since the areas falling under Raid Marwet are along the border with Assam and these are sensitive places.

“We want to thoroughly examine the matter and we take a decision after understanding the issue from all angles,” Syiem said.
