Heavy traffic jam at Civil Point as cabbies protest odd-even system

Meanwhile, this gathering of taxi drivers has disrupted the smooth flow of traffic in the city.

SHILLONG:

Taxi drivers of Shillong City, on July 13, gathered at Civil Point near Shillong Civil Hospital to protest against the order issued by the district administration to implement the odd-even system for taxis plying to and from commercial areas, particularly Motphran and Khyndailad.

Meanwhile, this gathering of taxi drivers has disrupted the smooth flow of traffic in the city, particularly in areas surrounding Civil Hospital due to the refusal of taxi drivers to remove their vehicles from the embarkment area near the Kiang Nangbah Memorial at Civil Point.

Despite the efforts of the police to calm the angry and desperate cabbies and let vehicular movement flow; however, there were an exchange of words and the conversation turned into a heated argument between the two parties.

Angry taxi drivers of Shillong hit the streets to protest against the odd-even system as imposed by the district administration for taxis plying to and from commercial areas in the city.

Taxi drivers refused to comply with this order and asked if the government is willing to pay Rs 3000 for the days they stay off the streets.

They said this restriction deprives them of the right to livelihood. “Will they come and pay Rs 3000 for the days I am asked to stay home? Will they meet my family’s expenses? If not, don’t lecture,” said an angry cabby.
