I am made a scapegoat; why are you crucifying me?: GK Iangrai

Calling himself a victim of a high-level Khaki vendetta politics, Iangrai said, there is an imminent threat to his life and his family's.

SHILLONG:

Former Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Meghalaya Police GK Iangrai, on February 14, claimed that there are lots of skeletons in the police department and that he was made a scapegoat to cover up for the number of scams in the department.

Speaking to the media after being released on bail today, Iangrai alleged that while in police custody, his human and fundamental rights were violated and complaints have been lodged with the court.

Calling himself a victim of a high-level Khaki vendetta politics, Iangrai said, there is an imminent threat to his life and his family’s.

“They are preventing me from speaking against and exposing them. This is a highly political vendetta. It started with an inquiry and during the inquiry, they leaked the report claiming that were scared that I might tamper with the evidence. They are actually scared that I might expose them (sic),” Iangrai said.

Putting his faith in the judiciary, the former AIG said that as a Khasi police officer, he has achieved so many things while sitting in the AIG chair but this attracted the envy of many.

“I am human; I might err somewhere but why are they crucifying me like this? What about the other people?” he asked.

Revealing that there is a 20-year-old case that has been gathering dust, Iangrai said, this case has names of prominent people – some retired and some on the verge of retiring, “but they don’t dare investigate that case”.

“I am innocent until proven guilty. Am I the only corrupted person? If I am corrupt, let the law decide and I don’t mind being hanged if it is by the constitution but I will not allow anyone to turn me into a scapegoat (sic),” he added.

Alleging that his arrest was part of a major plot and executed by the same masterminds who were behind the Cheristerfield encounter, Iangrai said,

“On Nov 2, when I came to know that they would reach my house, I had to hide because I was scared that they would replicate the Cheristerfield episode because they are the same – the same masterminds,” he further said.

Iangrai was arrested on November 2 last year in connection with the alleged misappropriation of government funds earmarked for the construction of the National Emergency Response System (NERS) Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) facility at Sadar Police Station Complex in Shillong.
