The bond between South Korea and Meghalaya has evolved into an extraordinary connection over the years. The mesmerising Korean dramas and movies, along with the ever-evolving K-pop music scene, have cemented this relationship. It is truly astounding to look back and recall the anticipation we felt while waiting for Arirang TV to air “Pops in Seoul,” where we would be updated on the latest K-pop news and listen to our beloved tunes. While the channel’s popularity may have dwindled, our admiration for Korean culture has only intensified in our state.
Who would have thought that we would one day witness Korean idols, such as Jang Han Byul and Pixy, gracing our region’s stages? And now, we can barely contain our excitement as we prepare to welcome another celebrated solo artiste from the K-pop world to perform at the breathtaking Umiam Lake this Saturday: the one and only Kim Woojin!
In conversation with The Meghalayan, Woojin expressed his delight in exploring a new country and immersing himself in its culture. “I am eager to indulge in all that India has to offer. As I embark on my first visit to India, I am keen to absorb as much as I can,” he said.
He expressed his desire to delve deeper into the country’s culture, which is steeped in rich traditions and customs. Moreover, he looks forward to witnessing India’s magnificent architecture, which is renowned for its intricate designs and vivid colours. “I am also excited to sample everything from street food to traditional dishes that incorporate local ingredients,” he added.
Kim Woojin is a man of diverse talents, having excelled not only in singing and dancing but also ventured into acting. His musical prowess extends beyond his own album, having contributed his melodious voice to the original soundtrack of Netflix’s popular drama, “Reborn Rich”. Woojin’s contribution, “In the End”, was the fifth addition to the show’s soundtrack and was released on December 13, 2022.
When questioned on what prompted him to pursue a career in both singing and acting, Woojin explained, “My passion for singing sparked my interest in acting, as I saw a strong connection between the two. As I delved deeper into the world of acting, I discovered a newfound joy, which led me to pursue both fields simultaneously.”
Regarding his debut mini album, “The Moment: A Minor”, Woojin shared his meticulous approach in ensuring every detail was perfect, as this was his first release under his own name. “I remember spending the quiet hours of early mornings, writing lyrics for In My Space. I put my heart and soul into this album.”
The translated lyrics of the first verse go as follows: “Late at night alone in my bed, at the end of the day when I lay down with a tired body, I’m always alone. The ceiling, I stared blankly at. There is a brilliant universe that I can’t take my eyes off of, as if comforting my heart.”
Woojin is all set to start his first solo ‘Still Dream’ tour in Asia this year, eagerly anticipating the experience. Speaking about his upcoming tour, he said, “I am excited at the prospect of visiting new countries and cities, particularly India because it is my very first time here.”
Known for his unique and eclectic musical style, Woojin often blends different cultures and styles into his music. Regarding the potential for incorporating aspects of Meghalayan culture into his music, he acknowledged, “I have not yet experienced the culture of the Himalayas, and so I look forward to discovering any aspects that may inspire me to create music that is fitting and complementary. I am open to incorporating the impressions left by my visit into my future work.”
As for his musical influences, Woojin holds a special admiration for K-pop group EXO, who played a pivotal role in sparking his aspirations to become a singer. “They are the group that made me want to become an idol,” he said.
Woojin’s dedicated fandom, known as the Cubs, is renowned for their ardent and unwavering support. While there are many ways in which fans can demonstrate their loyalty, Woojin values a sincere and heartfelt word of encouragement above all else.
