Karbis in Meghalaya safer than in Assam, says Nongpoh MDC

Balajied Ranee was addressing the concluding day of the 2nd annual Indigenous Karbi Traditional Ethnic and Cultural Arts Festival at Pithagog, Assam’s Kamrup District

PITHAGOG:

If Balajied Ranee, member of the district council from Nongpoh constituency, is to be believed, the Karbis residing in Meghalaya are safer than those residing in Assam.

Addressing the concluding day of the 2nd annual Indigenous Karbi Traditional Ethnic and Cultural Arts Festival at Pithagog in Assam’s Kamrup district, as the chief guest on Saturday, the MDC said, “India is a land of ‘unity in diversity’ and I know that the Karbi community residing in Meghalaya is safer than those living in Assam because in Meghalaya, we have our own land, but in Assam, the government owns the land.”

Organised to preserve the tradition and culture of the tribe residing in Meghalaya and Assam, the two-day festival hosted a slew of traditional activities including music, dance, food and traditional dresses, among others, highlighting the day-to-day activities of the Karbis residing in both the states.

“Thanks to the organiser for hosting this event. This is not just an event, but a wake-up call to preserve our culture because as an indigenous tribe, that’s our identity,” Ranee added.

The annual meet was organised by the Karbi Traditional Faith Association, Meghalaya and Assam.
