KHADC to introduce online payment of professional tax

"We have decided to offer online payment of professional tax," KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem said while replying to a motion during the last day of the council's summer session held on June 28.

SHILLONG:

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to introduce online payment of professional tax.

“We have decided to offer online payment of professional tax,” KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem said while replying to a motion during the last day of the council’s summer session held on June 28.

Over Rs 10 crore of professional tax is collected by the KHADC annually.

“The implementation of the new system will help to a great extent prevent leakage of revenue and we hope that this will also help to increase the professional tax to Rs 20 crore,” Syiem said.

He informed that the executive committee would immediately call for a meeting of the department for implementation of the new system.

According to him, the council is also planning to computerise all its revenue generation departments.

Earlier while supporting the motion moved by Nongpoh MDC Balajied Ranee, leader of opposition Titosstarwell Chyne said that the revenue collected from professional tax stand at Rs 13 crore but the present system of payment of professional tax is encouraging revenue leakage.

“Therefore, I feel that we should not encourage payment of professional tax by cash. I urge the executive committee to look into this matter very seriously,” he said.

On the issue related to issuing of trading license, the KHADC chief maintained that the trade department of the council should not be seen as a revenue generation department.

“Because if we say that the department is for revenue generation, it would mean that we have issue trading license to all who approached the council,” he said.

Syiem said that the new EC has decided to further strengthen the enforcement wing of the trade department.

“We will not allow the enforcement people to sit in the office but will ensure that they go to commercial areas to check against illegal trade,” he added.

Meanwhile, the CEM also said that he would soon call for a review meeting with all departments to improve the functioning of the council.
