KHADC to take up tax collection issue with KAAC

SHILLONG:

Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Titosstarwell Chyne has assured Mawhati legislator Charles Marngar (Congress) of taking up with Assam’s Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) the matter of some individuals collecting tax.

Chyne’s assurance came in response to a letter of Marngar on Thursday stating that the KAAC has allowed individuals to collect tax from vehicles carrying broomsticks, and seeking the KHADC’s intervention in the matter.

Marngar stated that vehicles carrying the broomsticks along the Assam–Meghalaya border are well within the jurisdiction of Mawhati constituency.

According to Marngar, check gates have been put up in Jatalong, Madan Umwang, Sabuda, Umlaper and Mawsaladiang.

Marngar, who is also the local Member of District Council, said that the broomsticks are taxed at the rate of Rs 8 per kg, which comes to around Rs15,000 per pickup truck.

Assuring Marngar of taking up the matter with the KAAC, Chyne said that it cannot tax farmers in areas under the jurisdiction of the KHADC.
