KSU against illegal settlements at Mahadev Khola

In a statement issued here, the union stated that the Forest department had given away land for construction of a Hindu temple at Mahadev Khola in 1923 for religious purposes and not for any settlement.

Shillong:

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has lodged a complaint to the Divisional Forest Officer, East Khasi Hills on illegal settlers at Mahadev Khola.

In a statement issued here, the union stated that the Forest department had given away land for construction of a Hindu temple at Mahadev Khola in 1923 for religious purposes and not for any settlement.

However, the union claimed that it found 30-40 households from non-indigenous backgrounds and many shopkeepers without valid documents staying in the area.

The union stated that the dorbar shnong has no say in this as it is a settlement inside a forest area.

The union also found that there is indiscriminate dumping of garbage and wastes from houses which make its way to the streams.

The union also said that it is a drug hotspot with multiple reports of robbery.
