KSU against USTM hosting event on Good Friday

The KSU USTM-RIST Unit has written to the university, urging them to postpone the event and reschedule the program in order not to hurt the sentiments of the Christian students in the university and the Christian community of Meghalaya.

NONGPOH:

The Khasi Students Union (North Khasi Hills District Unit) expressed concern for the sentiments of believing Christians in Meghalaya after it was revealed that the University of Science and Technology (USTM) would hold its North East Graduate Congress from April 7 to 9 at Khanapara, which would coincide with Good Friday on April 7 and Easter on April 9.

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter and is observed in somber fashion to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth and his death at Calvary, and then his resurrection, marking Easter or Resurrection Sunday.

Speaking to media persons, KSU President (North Khasi Hills District Unit) Ferdynald Kharkamni said that the KSU strongly opposes the university choosing to begin its event on Good Friday.

“The KSU USTM-RIST Unit has written to the university, urging them to postpone the event and reschedule the program in order not to hurt the sentiments of the Christian students in the university and the Christian community of Meghalaya,” said Kharkamni. KSU has also recommended the university to observe the Christian holidays marked as “state holidays” by the Government of India.

Kharkamni said the KSU has also appealed to the state government through the Education minister, Rakkam Sangma, to intervene in the matter.
