SHILLONG:
Following alleged reports of local youths being assaulted by non-indigenous people, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the Khasi community to stay united.
In a statement issued here, the general secretary of the union, Donald Thabah, has expressed concern over such assaults especially in Shillong.
He recalled the killing of KSU member late Lurshai Hynniewta at Pyntha Umdan in 2020; in 2021, there was the death of Phershanroy Myrthong at Golf Links and Elias L. Nonglait at Them Bijoy. He claimed that there are other incidents of assault in Nongmensong, Rilbong, and the 4th Furlong.
He went on to claim that a group assaulted some Khasi youths, and the CRFF personnel, instead of protecting them, resorted to lathi-charging.
Thabah said that such incidents remind the union of the times in the 70s, 80s, and 90s he claimed that attempts were made to drive the indigenous people out of Shillong.
