Speaking about the creation of a block in South West Khasi Hills, president of KSU South West Khasi Hills District, Forwardman Nongrem, said, “The areas there lack development and people have to travel 30 km - 60 km distance from these places to Mawkyrwat.”

SHILLONG:

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District has demanded the government to set up a Community and Rural Development (C&RD) block at Umdohlun or Wahkaji and to upgrade Mawsynram block to Civil Sub-Division.

Speaking about the creation of a block in South West Khasi Hills, president of KSU South West Khasi Hills District, Forwardman Nongrem, said, “The areas there lack development and people have to travel 30 km – 60 km distance from these places to Mawkyrwat.”

“We have to take this up with the government again as it has been a long pending issue,” he said.

Assistant finance secretary Marconi Thongni said that the villages ahead of Wahkaji are facing power issues although electric posts are installed.

Meanwhile, the general secretary of KSU SWKH unit, Jiedsing Nongsiej, called upon the government to upgrade the Mawsynram block, which was set up in the year 1962, to a civil sub-division.

He said that Mawsynram has more than 160 villages under its jurisdiction. He observed that there is a need to meet the traditional heads to push for the demand.

The union leaders have urged the respective representatives to pursue the matters.
