KSU, FKJGP visit Noapara as Assam allegedly continues to set up border posts

The villagers claimed that people from Assam would cause problems for the residents residing on the other side of the border from time to time, alleging that Assam people would even demand money from the villagers.

SHILLONG:

The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), on May 8, visited the border villages of Noapara and Dronpara, which are close to Langpih in West Khasi Hills, after receiving complaints about the alleged failure of Assam in maintaining status quo by setting up border posts without the villages’ consent.

To uncover the truth, members from the two student bodies met with village elders from Noapara, Komphaduli, and Dronpara.

The villagers claimed that people from Assam would cause problems for the residents residing on the other side of the border from time to time, alleging that Assam people would even demand money from the villagers.

They further alleged of being subjected to different kinds of criminal activities like theft whereby even their agricultural tools were snatched and stolen by residents from across the border.

The KSU and FKJGP have urged the MDA II government to speak out against Assam for its ‘failure’ to maintain status quo, and to caution the Assam government against stirring up trouble.

Furthermore, they stated that unless the government takes action, the two student bodies will be forced to defend the border areas on their own.
