NONGPOH:
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Nongtyngur Unit on October 23 joined hands with village elders and the headman to work together to repair the Root Bridge at Nongtyngur.
The initiative had been taken by the KSU to maintain the Living Root Bridge after visitors to the place cut the roots and left behind litter.
“KSU is cleaning and repairing the road to maintain it’s beauty, which is a gift given to us by our ancestors,” Melajied Khongbuh, general secretary of KSU Nongtyngur Unit, said.
The KSU also requested visitors and tourists to maintain the beauty of the place by maintaining its cleanliness. It also requested visitors not to cut the roots and to help the union preserve the speciality of the place.
Expressing its gratitude to the dorbar shnong for its support, the KSU said, “With the Support of everyone, we can achieve our goal to maintain and preserve the beauty of our mother Earth.”
Notably, Meghalaya has a number of living root bridges that have over the years been built and preserved by the Khasi community. Living Root Bridges are one of this tribe’s legacies. Some of the places where these bridges can be found are Nongriat, Mawlynnong-Nohwet, Kudengrim, Mawkyrnot, etc.
