Shillong :
The Khasi Students’ Union, West Jaintia Hills district has urged the state government to take serious note of the warning issued by the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) that a Manipur-like situation is inevitable if they lose their lands to Meghalaya.
Publicity secretary of the union, Juhhi Tariang said, “We want to make it clear that we neither want an inch of other people’s land nor let go an inch of our land to others.”
On the other hand, Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) on Friday asked the Karbi KSA to refrain from making statements that could lead to unrest as people of Block-I have the right to demand to return to Meghalaya.
“We emphasise that the KSA leaders should refrain from making any statements that could lead to unrest and instead let the people decide freely,” JSU said in a statement.
The JSU also said that Block 1 isn’t under a constitutional boundary or agreement and in fact it was forcefully detached from United Khasi Jaintia Hills for administrative convenience in 1951.
“We assert that the people of Block 1 have the right to demand to return to the Jaintia hills region in Meghalaya,” it stated.
Meanwhile, the JSU warned the KSA leaders that their association should take responsibility if any communal conflicts arise in both the states of Meghalaya and Assam.
