Due to the incessant rain in the area, a landslide occurred at 7 am on April 5, along the tunnel in Sonapyrdi along National Highway 06 in East Jaintia Hills district. The entire stretch has been blocked and vehicular movement have been stopped.
According to the locals, the issue was brought before the district administration, and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is working to clear the route. So far, no casualties have been reported.
As this is a common occurrence in the area, the residents also appealed to the authorities for a long-term solution to the issue. A local resident said, “We would like to see this problem handled once and for all since this is what usually happens the moment it starts raining.”
